The LANE resurrects Charles Darwin for Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday
The scientific journalist and naturalist Sir David Attenborough, celebrated in the English‑speaking world for his popular BBC programmes, turned 100 years old this Friday, 8 May. To mark the milestone and pay tribute to “the man who helped the world fall in love with nature,” the Laboratory of Artificial & Natural Evolution (LANE) at UNIGE has brought Charles Darwin back to life—without AI!
LANE brings together biologists, bioinformaticians, physicists, computer scientists, mathematicians and 3‑D artists to study several non‑standard model species, mainly reptiles and “exotic” mammals. This work sheds light on fascinating, yet still little‑known, biological and physical processes that gave rise to the complex and diverse living world.
